Homosexuality is defined as "an act of gross indecency" in Singapore. Even though there are many countries in the world that legalize same sex marriage, Singapore will not likely become one of them. The reason is that if Singapore legalized same sex marriage, it could cause the birth rate of Singapore to drop, many religions and races in Singapore do not encourage homosexuality and it would weaken the meaning of marriage.
The fertility rate of women in Singapore is already below the comfortable 2 births every couple and if same sex marriage is legalized it would mean that the birth rate would drop as people of the same gender are unable to give birth to children. As Singapore’s birth rate is very low, I do not think that the Singapore government would support same sex marriage as it will add to the burden of Singapore’s economic challenges. Furthermore, If the birth rate in Singapore drops, the defense of Singapore would weaken as there are fewer soldiers to serve the country which could further create problems like Muti-National Companies(MNCs) to be unwilling to come to Singapore to invest.
Races such as the Chinese do not encourage same sex marriage due to the chinese belief that having children is a blessing and that a husband and wife together with children is a complete family. Same sex marriage is also offensive and a swipe to the religious freedom of the majority to have to recognize a relationship they consider sinful.
Marriage is often defined as “ the social institution under which a man and woman establish their decision to live as husband and wife by legal commitments or religious ceremonies” . A law allowing gay marriage would increase the number of joke or non-serious marriages, such as a couple of friends who want to save on taxes or a group of friends being dared to marry of the same gender. Marriage is the most sacred institution in this country, and every society considers it the joining of a man and a woman. It makes biological sense since only a man and woman can pro-create.
In conclusion, I feel that same sex marriage will not be accepted in Singapore due to the disadvantages and negative effects that it brings.
