News story

I had recently read a news report about China. It was talking about China overtaking the US in science by the year 2013. The report told me about the rapid growth China has had. However, the report did not give me in detail what China has done recently to further improve on science which I wanted to know. The report shows that chinese spending has grown by 20% per year since 1999.

A letter to the Straits Times

I think that what Singaporeans could learn from the recent Japanese earthquake is to be vigilant at all times, you would never know what could happen next. I also learned that we should stay together in a time of a crisis like this, we should just toss our differences aside and give out a helping hand to those in need. I think that we as a nation do possess what it takes to overcome a crisis like this. Everyday, when we are reciting the national pledge, it says, " We, the citizens of Singapore, pledge ourselves as one united people." This everyday routine could help us Singaporeans to unite as one in a time of crisis and overcome it together.

Literature

What is literature to me? It is the study of English and and the meaning in a sentence. I think that without literature, people would not understand each other even though they are speaking the same language. Literature helps us t communicate with each other and provide convenience in our daily lives. In life, it helps to teach us values and manners, such as " Dont judge a book by its cover". To me, literature is also the flavour of a speech. It helps to make the speech more interesting and easy to understand. Literature is also the meaning of a sentence, it gives a word its sense and meaning. Without literature, people would be unable to understand each other.

Have enough to combat racism?

I think that there is enough that has been done to combat racism in Singapore as I can see people of different races interacting with each other as an equal in public places. Racism can be dealt with in Singapore by letting people of different races talk to each other and let them understand that there is not much difference in their races and they should not make false judgments on other people's race.
I think in Singapore what has been done to combat racism is to have Racial Harmony Day, it is a day where people of all races in Singapore come together to celebrate. In school, pupils are allowed to wear their own costumes which let people know more about their own race. I think that racism can be dealt with by creating a lesson in school to educate the students more about the cultures of other races.

CIP on founder's day

Yesterday I was brought by the school to do Community Involvement Programme(CIP) at Jurong Point with elderly people. We were supposed to interact with the elderly over there and also learn more about their lives. I was grouped with a classmate to take care of an elderly called Sister Anna. She was about 73 years old. Despite her old age, she was still very lively and talkative. Firstly, we went to Mac Donald to have breakfast. Sister Anna had already eaten her breakfast, so she only wanted to have tea. So my classmate went to buy her tea while I stayed to talk to her. After having breakfast, we went to the supermarket at NTUC extra to shop. Sister Anna did not like to waste money on useless things so we window shopped. We then went back to the home and waved goodbye to the elderly people. I feel that we should not abandon our parents in a home as they would feel very lonely and bored over there.
